Musical fairy tale «Ruslan and Lyudmila» with sand animation
Pushkin’s poem «Ruslan and Lyudmila» will guide the audience to the world of tales and epics — to a place where the leaves of a magical oak tree rustle above Lukomorye place, and the Learned Cat tells his mysterious stories.
In the dim light of the hall, to the sounds of live music by Russian composers of the 19th century, right before the audience’s eyes, the artist will create amazing illustrations from coloured sand: every hand movement will transform the light scattering of sand into a new picture, as if by magic. The viewers will see beautiful scenes, appearing from the fragile cloud of sand: the wedding feast at Prince Vladimir’s — where nothing yet foretells disaster; a whirlwind, carrying Lyudmila away; the gloomy lair of the treacherous Chernomor, with its magical halls and deceptive visions. The sand will bring to life the formidable talking head — the loyal guardian of ancient secrets — which will open the way for Ruslan to save Lyudmila.
The music of M. I. Glinka, M. Balakirev, A. Borodin, M. Musorgsky, A. Dargomyzhsky, and N. A. Rimsky‑Korsakov will be performed on the piano and will become the soul of the performance. It won’t just accompany the fairy tale, but will literally bring it to life: solemn melodies will convey Ruslan’s heroic strength, gentle tunes will reveal Lyudmila’s tender feelings, and mysterious sounds will immerse visitors in the magical atmosphere of Chernomor’s domains. In every chord, you’ll feel the breath of an era and the subtle interplay of contrasts: from bright joy to somber uncertainty.
Theatre and film actor Sergei Stepanov will lead the audience through this amazing story: his expressive reading will bring Pushkin’s lines to life and help you take a fresh look at the fairy tale you’ve known since childhood.
